Grey-bellied Night Monkeys

The grey-bellied night monkey is a small New World monkey, native to tropical and subtropical forests of South America. Found in dry and moist areas, the night monkey occupies all levels of the forest canopy, preferring dense vegetation with tangles of vines where the trees are evenly dispersed. Nocturnal by nature, the night monkey faces an ongoing and significant threat from hunting, harvesting for use in pharmaceutical research and habitat destruction.

Species name: Aotus lemurinus

Conservation Status: Vulnerable

In the shadows of the world’s largest biodiversity conference (CBD COP 16) ziranjiti took time to walk and work with local conservationists to track the night monkey, exploring the potential of conservation to support local environmental education and engagement.
