The Tapanuli orangutan live in tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests of Sumatra, Indonesia, With fewer than 800 individuals remaining and restricted to an area of about 1,000 km2, the Tapanuli orangutan is the rarest great ape. It is listed as critically endangered due of hunting, conflict with humans, illegal wildlife trade, and rampant habitat destruction for small scale agriculture, mining and energy projects.
Members of ziranjiti were part of a select group of foreign scientists invited in to visit the Batang Toru landscape, home to the Tapanuli orangutan, and explore some of the threats and challenges faced by this most endangered primate n its struggle to coexist in a landscape valued for some of humans most important and impactful commodities.
